Sure, 1TB hard disks in the 2.5-inch form factor may have existed for a while now, but it does not change the fact that such high-capacityhard disks came with a single design flaw, which is that it was designed for notebooks which had the real estate needed to support hard disks that boasts heights greater than the standard 9.5mm that is found on most mobile hard disks designed to be used by mainstream notebooks. However, the good news is that this is about to change very soon, for Western Digital has just announced the availability of a new standard-height 2.5-inch hard disk which sports the same hulking 1TB that just about every notebook user has been lusting for all this while.
According to the press release issued by Western Digital, the new hard disk, which has been designed specially for mainstream notebooks, "utilizes 500 GB-per-platter areal density and is now available in the highest capacity for 2.5-inch hard drives in the industry-standard 9.5 mm, two-platter (2-disk) form factor". That being said, the new hard disk also sports the Scorpio Blue branding, which means that users can expect to receive a standard-performance hard disk that boasts a platter speed of 5400rpm, as well as access to the wide range of features that many have come to associate the Scorpio Blue line of hard disks with, such as 8MB of cache, low power consumption, shock tolerance and head packing, among many others.
Unfortunately, Western Digital has not provided any information as to when the new 1TB, standard-height mobile hard disk will be available for sale globally. However, if it is of any consolation, the hard disk is reportedly already on the retail shlevesin the US right now at the recommended retail price of US$139.
